Strange GNOME menu behaviour

Hi all,

Since about a week ago, which seemed to coincide with applying Ubuntu's
latest security updates, items in my GNOME Applications menu have been
impossible to select.  The Places and System menus are fine, but
clicking Applications flashes up the menu for about a quarter of a
second before the menu disappears.  Since then I've been launching
programs using the command prompt, but it's a bit annoying, and I'd like
to try to fix this.  Has anyone heard of anything like this?  It looks
like a bug in gnome-panel, but I haven't been able to find any other
reports of this.  So I guess I'll just try re-creating my menu config
files for now.  Could anyone suggest a clean way to do this?  I'd
appreciate any help!
