Thank you for that link.. I didn't realize it was that complicated..
It's actually way too complicated for me to even begin to do all that.
I printed it out and it's 15 A4 pages.. 15 pages with detailed
technical shell commands on how to get a modem to work so I can connect
to the internet.. In many parts of the world, ADSL isn't very available
or affordable, so I will have to make do with a dialup connection for
the foreseeable future.
But as it stands, I think I'm more inclined to go with another solution
like trying to buy an old serial modem second hand.
I think the current modem situation is one of the major obstacles for
Ubuntu at the moment. More so than any problems on newer, sexier
hardware than a plain old modem.
Is there any progress being made in this area? Ideally I would like
Ubuntu to just recognize and use any Winmodems/softmodems it finds. It
does it for all other hardware, so why not modems? Winmodems are not
going to go away, and even with ADSL becoming more widespread, ADSL
isn't everywhere. Plus there's faxing of course, which Ubuntu currently
can't do unless you find a serial 'real' modem.
