What modems work with Ubuntu?

Yes, you can still get real modems, at least here in the US, where they 
can be found in the office supply stores. If at all possible, get an 
external serial port modem if you can. They Just Work. There are also 
some PCI modems that will work, but they require some configuration.

Sorry, but I've never dealt with a USB modem. (But I do have an old ISA 
slot internal modem still working on my second computer. I'd still be 
using it on this computer but ISA slots disappeared from the market some 
time ago.)
