Decide what you want to do first.
I would do firewall and anti-virus program later. It complicates matters
unnecessarily.

I am a brandnew Linux newbie and I was amazed how easy it was to install
Ubuntu (in my case it was easier than installing my WIN98SE).
I missed my TB (ThunderBird) so downloaded TB??.tar,gz file (tar.gz is
Linux, no mistake possible, right?).
...... only to find out that Synaptic made me download a special Ubuntu
version of TB (even on my dial-up it did not take long).

It's as simple as that.
It is simple ....... keep it that way .... use Synaptic.
Get your system working first (and make notes, so you can do it again
later). Experiment later.
