As a counter-example I would like to bring to your attention the typical
community library. They are not patient with noisy people. There is an
etiquette that makes the library effective for people to use for its
stated purpose. It is similar in a mailing list, there is an etiquette,
and the regular users of the facility rarely tolerate those that refuse
to accept it and that insist on being awkward and unsociable. Using a
computer to engage in social interaction has a tendency to make people
think they are each in charge. The etiquette of a list should be given
by the list administrator (who is responsible for making the list
effective for its stated purpose), and everybody should follow and
police that - just as everybody in a library will aggressively shush you
if you are too noisy.
Is there a stated etiquette for this list?
