While this is more or less right, it's worth noting that by default this
cache is cleared at intervals, automatically.

You can configure this, however - in Synaptic for instance you can choose
to keep all packages indefinitely. I forget the exact option, but it
is fairly discoverable.

Of course, if you do this it is an idea to keep an eye on the size of the
cache, as it will keep on growing. You can use the " apt-get clean"
command to clear it out, or "apt-get autoclean" to remove only redundant
packages that are outdated and no longer downloadable. ( insert sudo as
appropriate, of course)
