I have edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf as per the file. but file location in
kubuntu is
vgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$ ls -l /usr/share/doc/xorg-driver-synaptics/README.alps
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 2248 2004-08-01 09:56
/usr/share/doc/xorg-driver-synaptics/README.alps.
I have also changed server layout and load synaptics as mentioned. I
have configured ksynaptics from system settings. It didn't ask for
sudo. as user I have set it. but it didn't wotk for me in kubuntu with
kde3.51. I have checked for modules
lvgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.12-9-386 |grep CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2=m
lvgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.12-9-386 |grep
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS
lvgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.12-9-386 |grep CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=m
lvgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$ sudo lsmod|grep ps
psmouse                26116  0
lvgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$ sudo lsmod|grep ev
dev_acpi               11396  0
joydev                  9280  0
tsdev                   7616  0
evdev                   9088  1
mousedev               10912  1
lvgandhi at lvgdell600m:~$
I am using stock kubuntu kernel. As per above there is no
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS in stock kernel.

Can you give your machine details and also relevent portions of xorg.conf.
How did you config ksynaptics?
