Hi Matthew:

I had a problem where Linux (FC4 or Ubuntu Hoary or Breezy) would not
resolve names. Using tcpdump and Ethereal I was able to see that the
responses to the DNS requests from browser Konqurer (which browsed fine)
were what one would expect where those from Firefox (which timed out while
trying to connect) were an IP of 1.0.0.0! Doing a forum search on Firefox
DNS I found that you could disable IPv6-dns within Firefox, and that doing
so permitted it to browse normally.
It is fairly simple to disable IPv6 in FC4 and doing so does not appear to
effect the apps, however if you disable IPv6 in Ubuntu the apps do not work
(Synaptic for example). Looking a bit further I found someone who simply
did not use his modem's nameserver function and had no problem. Indeed, I
find that commenting out the modem as a nameserver in resolv.conf makes
Firefox, Synaptic and similar functions work in Ubuntu (Firefox IPv6-dns
enabled). I believe that the modem's firmware has a problem. Since I do
not control the modem routing around it is a much simpler solution.

I know they are still working on the IPv6 stacks. I know that firmware in
modems are still being updated. Admittedly a bit of a long shot but I was
interested if it might be that.

Regards,

Tod
