A handy too is the Network Monitor toolbar applet.  Right click on
your gnome toolbar and choose "add to toolbar" and choose network
monitor.  You can then configure network monitor to look at any
available network interface.  A single click on the network monitor
applet brings up a dialog.  The support tab shows you information
about your network connection, a la Windows XP.
