I'm always late to the party and always odd man out (but that's OK -
since this is "late" it will be probably be ignored anyway).

Nevertheless, I feel the urge to contribute my two cents.

Gmail puts all the other web-based mail services (including the new
Yahoo! Mail beta) to shame. It has the best and most clever features
(as has been pointed out).

So what's wrong with it?

First off - mailing lists!

For some reason (that only some "genius" at Google can grasp) Gmail does
not include your messages in anything you send to a malling list. You
won't see them. They don't show up. That doesn't mean they didn't get
to the list,. Google just doesn't think you need to see them as long as
everyone else does.

This can be confusing to say the least. It's been brought to Google's
attention on many occasions but they seem to think this "feature" is a
keeper.

Second - targeted advertising.

If you do notice the ads you'll notice that sometimes they can be a bit
creepy. How so? Well the subject of the ads pertains to the (possibly
confidential) text in your email.

Other than those two issues, they rock.

As far issue #1 is concerned ,ever since I discovered gmane.org I it
doesn't matter. I don't do mailing lists via "mail" anymore anyway.
Usenet is more manageable and frees up space and clutter in your
inbox/mail server/account.

As for issue #2, it can be downright funny to see what AdSense comes up
with at times. I don't really mind. I just don't use Gmail for
anything overtly personal or confidential. Gmail is but one of a few
options I have for email. Most of my email is handled by my own server
with cc's to my Gmail account.
