cdrecord -scanbus doesn't find my CD writer

I just replaced the CD im my Ubuntu machine with a CD writer. The machine
is Kubuntu

root at ubuntu:~# uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Tue Dec 5 22:28:26 UTC 2006 i686
GNU/Linux

I think that this is the issue:

cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open
SCSI driver.

What do I need to do to make this work?
