Plaintext passwords in Gaim

It really depends on the service your connecting to, and to
my knowledge there are no IM protocols in common use that
support digest authentication.  So gaim has to store the
passwords in some form it can retrieve at a later time.  If
it encrypted them it would still have to store the master
password somewhere.  The correct solution would be to use
gnome-keyring.  If your interested, there seems to be a
patch.  Not sure what version of gaim its for, but it should
be worth a try.
