That got "Unable to find simple control 'IEC958 Playback Switch'", however
# amixer cset name='IEC958 Playback Switch' off
worked.
NOW, why my face is red.
Half the problem was solved by System=>Preferences=>Sound and setting
all the options to ALSA. Out of the box, some were "nforce" and that
didn't work. The only setup that got a positive sound test was the ALSA
ones. Mildly curious, since nVidia formerly said their NVSOUND driver
was OSS; still, whatever works.
BUT, before I got that positive sound test, it helped greatly to plug
the speakers into "Line-Out" instead of "Line-In." The color coding
seemed to match the wrong way.
Thanks for the help.
