Default Display Manager?

Hardware Abstraction Layer, if I remember correctly. Perhaps try

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm   ( just guessing that perhaps my method
short-circuits something in the configuration - I don't think I've used the
/etc/X11/default-display-manager hack since Debian Woody, so a lot has
happened since ! )

As for the initials - you are no doubt aware that if you use the following
letter of each initial, you get "IBM" - so blame it on IBM ;-)
