Hi
First thing you need to learn is how to use Synaptic.
With Ubuntu almost every piece of software you want is available thru Synaptic.
You don't usually mess with tarballs at all.

Take a look at
http://www.beginningubuntu.com/software_8.html
or
http://www.debianadmin.com/simple-package-management-with-synaptic-package-manager-in-ubuntu.html
 or the built in help.
Try installing aircrack and kismet that way - if you have any problems
by all means ask.

Now, if you really need to use a tarball, open it up and read the
included README and/or INSTALL files - they normally tell you most of
what you need to know. You will also need to
install build-essentials and maybe some other stuff first..... thru
Synaptic of course :-)

Does that help?
Brian
