seems to be a week of problems here...

Now I have discovered that a rather old HP Omnibook 6100 is getting so
hot running Ubuntu that it crashes (system freeze). The fan never ever
kicks in.
Once I tried acpi=off on the kernel line and when the laptop got
exceptionally hot the fan kicked in! But then I lost CPU stepping and
other nifty ACPI things. Is there a setting where I can keep the
goodness of ACPI but still let my fan spin when necessary?
