You can do a network install of Ubuntu, but you usually still need a boot cd.
It's just a lot smaller and simpler (and better for that 4x drive :-)
Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD
or even https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Netboot if you don't mind
mucking about a bunch just to avoid using the cdrom altogether....
