Ubuntu crashes every few days

Here on dapper 6.06, all the files in /var/log/cups/*  are 

-rw-r--r-- 1 cupsys lp 

except for

-rw-r----- 1 cupsys lpadmin   0 2006-12-06 07:35 /var/log/cups/access_log
-rw-r----- 1 cupsys lpadmin   0 2006-12-05 08:08 /var/log/cups/error_log
-rw-r----- 1 cupsys lpadmin   0 2006-09-25 07:36 /var/log/cups/page_log

The parent directory /var/log/cups  is

$ ls -ld /var/log/cups
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2006-12-06 07:35 /var/log/cups


So I think you are on the right track with your observations.
