Ubuntu crashes every few days

I had erratic behavior before which was caused by not having any swap
memory / swap file available. (which got lost for some reason). You can
check that in the 'System Monitor' from System->Administration..
Secondly I would try disabling any special drivers you might be running,
and turn off as many services as possible.
Finally you can just reinstall Dapper. (or Edgy) It should run fine on
a Thinkpad, unless there's some hardware/memory problem of course. (Try
a mem-test)
