video settings on install

That's happened with me on the two machines I've installed Dapper to, 
and when X sits there looking bad, I shift-alt-F2 to get another 
text-login session, in which I can edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Changing the 
default resolution to 16 and changing the modes for 16 usually work for 
me. (No fancy video cards on my boxes -- 16-bit is enough for me. You 
can experiment with what you know (think) your card is capable of).

Then I exit and go back to the X11 session (Alt-F7? I forget. I usually 
just hunt around. I'm used to FreeBSD, which runs X elsewhere.) When I'm 
there I restart X with control-alt-backspace.
