reinstall gnome without messing up other thing?

My OS: Dapper x86 on AMD64 (with both gnome and kde installed)

gnome was broken for unknown reason, saw flickering
panel after seeing start-up splash and hearing loggin music.

I turned off all startup program by editing ~/.config/Autostart/
and the problem is still there.

Looks like the easiest way is to reinstall all GTK stuff.
Any idea on how I do to have gnome back without messing up
other things such as kde?
