I'm running a Dell Inspiron 9200 with Dell's P.O.S. (Broadcom chipset)
network card. I should have gone with the stock Intel card. Anyway, I
had a bugger of a time getting the wireless to work until I found a deb
package that installs the firmware necessary for my card. I seem to
remember getting it either from a page on the Ubuntu wiki or forums.
The file's name is bcm43xx-firmware_1.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb.
Just install the file and it will place files in /lib/firmware all
starting with bcm43xx_.
dpkg -i bcm43xx-firmware_1.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb
This will allow your card to use the already provided bcm43xx module
included in the default install (At least I think it's included by
default. Run `lsmod | grep bcm43xx` to be sure.).
Then install the network manager package from the repositories. Run
nm-applet and you should be able to connect to wireless access points
though the little applet in the system tray. I'm writing this email
connected in that very way.
If you have any questions let me know.
