eclipse + cdt does not work properly.

Hi all!

I just used Synaptic to download eclipse and the cdt environment with
all settings defaulted.  When I try to create a C or C++ project I get
the error message:

Selected Wizard could not be started.

Reason:
Plug-in org.eclipse.cdt.make.ui was unable to instantiate class
org.eclipse.cdt.make.ui.wizards.NewMakeCCProjectWizard.

The details are java.lang.NullPointerException

Using Synaptic, I totally uninstalled eclipse and all plugins, rebooted
and reinstalled them.  Unfortunately I get exactly the same results.

The system is an AMD-64 with 2 GB RAM and 1000GB disk space.

Eclipse + cdt works fine on another system using a 32-bit AMD processor.

Any Ideas?
