It is late for me so I can only help a little.
I think more information could help us. Computer HW (usb portions
specific). It would be interesting to see the output of lsusb before
and after a device was attached.
For comparison, the output of my syslog with my camera attached (it
did successfully automount, I am up to date Dapper):

Further info which may help us:
Do you use hubs? Which hubs?
Do you use long USB extension cords?
What USB devices are you trying to attach?
What did they used to do, and under which OS (as specific as you can be).
