Installing (k)ubuntu on a HP zd8000

These white blobs you speak of are known - in the Windows XP community -
as the White Screen of Death.  In Windows, it's an easy fix of updating
the graphics driver, and disabling an option in the advanced settings
for the card, namely automatic scaling.  I just downloaded Ubuntu, and
haven't installed it yet, but I have started repartitioning and
resizing my Windows partitions so I can install Ubuntu tonight.
