Well Patrick,
You are all over the place here.
There was nothing wrong with the modem - it was getting a CONNECT
wvdial has been ok for me in the past, and it was working, just
the authentification stage was failing, likely due to the lack of sudo.

I can't determine what exactly you are doing now, and without
the exact error message it's tough to help.

Pick one method to connect and post complete output...
