mkinitrd failure

I have a similar problem. Related reports suggest that a logical volume
might be required on the target mkinitrd device. I've tried various
ways to work around this dependency without success. There seems to be
an implicit assumption that the only use of mkinitrd is to build an
initrd on an existing logical volume.
