Where to add X startup actions?

There are a few places it could be put.
~/.gnomerc
~/.xinitrc
~/.xsession
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/
.gnomerc and .xsession are run by the default Ubuntu startup, as well as
any scripts put into /etc/X11/Xsession.d
