cannot properly shutdown

In Ubuntu,when i hit the shutdown,or restart button(both logged in and not),the screen where it'd normally show Ubuntu or Kubuntu and then shut everything down is just black and hangs. Ive let it for 2.5 hrs straight already and all it did is hang there. Ive tried running in repair mode and in failsafe GDM seesions and i get the same thing,resulting in I have to pull the power to shut it down.
