Hmmm, at first, I too had problems retrieving mail with POP.
But that was because I had mistakenly enabled "authentication" for POP (it must only be enabled for SMTP, not POP, if you read the Gmail instruction carefully...).
So try disabling it : in the account preferences dialog, click on the "Receive" Tab, and uncheck the authentication option.

I hope that fixes your problem... because I don't know anything about authentication and SSL and STARTLS and all that stuff... as it'sz the first time I have an e-mail account that needs all these options, so it's all brand new to me...

If you look in ~/Sylpheed-2.0/accountrc , you will see the confugration for all your accounts. I pasted the section that describes my Gmail account, if you just copy/paste it into your own accountrc, and just change your personail details (e-mail address and password etc..), I guess it ought to work !
