In the SSL tab, try turning off the "blocking" option, and set SSL and
STARTTLS

You can set the correct ports in the Advanced tab.

I think those SSL setings might be where your problem is. Also be sure
you use username at gmail.com rather than just the username, and of course you
need to enable pop in gmail itself, and all the other bits covered in the
Gmail howto, but I guess you have done all that  ...
