no sound on XMMS

Sounds like (excuse the pun) you have missing codecs. best solution is
to install Automatix and choose the codecs install from there, or to
visit the Ubuntu Wiki and follow the "restricted formats" howto page

Once all ocdecs are in, you may need to switch your main driver from
OSS to ALSA to get everything working (Either in Ubuntu or XMMS)
