Synaptic freezes after use

I'm not sure I know what you mean by "freezes".  For me, Synaptic can
hang while it is updating the database (it locks the $USER out by design
during update), and then not "come back."  

Less frequent but more serious, Synaptic will "stick" on a package, and
nothing can be done to "unstick" it.  Lets say you've marked
coffee_1.0.deb to install, and choose apply.  Install exits with an
error code, but doesn't release the package selection.  Next time you
launch Synaptic, it will again try - and again fail - to install
coffee_1.0.deb.
