I have the same headset and the same problems! ](*,)
IMHO - This is a bug!
I have done the following:
- Disabled onboard audio (in the BIOS)
- Set the USB interface to USB 1 (in the BIOS) to get around a problem
in recognising my Flash Drive
(http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1283378#post1283378)
- I have downloaded the Beta version of Skype 1.3.0.30 - This works
much, much better than the other versions - but many problems remain
- I have fiddled with the settings in this post:
The good news is that sound works always! I can record using
mhWaveEdit but Audacity does not work. The Gnome sound record works
occasionally but mostly it will hang the sound system. I have to
fiddle with VLC's sound settings before sound works.
Skype works sometimes and sometimes it reports "problem with sound
device" I can fiddle with Skype choosing between OSS and ALSA with no
improvement. The only solution is a reboot and then it could happen
again and again. And rebooting again will bring up USB + AUDIO + Skype
into a state where it works, and even then I have problems with short
parts of the audio cutting out and disappearing.
Then there is an issue that lsub would report the headset as a Logitech
headset etc. Should I unplug the headset and type in lsusb again, lsusb
would hang without output until I reboot. (This is called the
(Windows-de-ja-vu experience")
Sadly to say this issue is not really an improvement over Breezy! I
purchased the USB Logitech 250 headset because many posts on this forum
implied that there are absolutely no problems with USB sound devices in
Linux. For that reason I also disabled the internal audio.
Now my dilemma: I use this PC in business and I must get Skype to
work! 14 Months ago I dumped Windows and changed to Ubuntu. Ubuntu is
great! If it were not for the inability of Skype working every day and
the USB problems, I could say I have never looked back. Daily there
are more clients insisting that I communicate in Skype. My choices are
to wait for Ubuntu to fix something that is questionable whether it is a
bug, try a different Linux Distro (Gentoo perhaps?), or go back to
Windows where Skype Works!
The world is starting to communicate via Skype, I have to get Skype
working!!! Skype is becoming a de-facto standard, therefore anything
that prevents Skype from working should be classified as a bug. Not
having Skype working is becoming akin to not being able to receive/send
email.
