xserver problems during update

yes, yes... thankyou...

1) My boxes ARE not directly exposed to the external internet...

2) I'm sick and tired of security updates breaking X... I had enough of this 
hassle with other distros and my nvidia cards. Nothing is more annoying than 
having to go round and re-install the nvidia drivers cos of a kernel or X 
update. For some weird reason, I have never, ever, been able to get distro 
supplied nvidia 3D drivers working. I've always had to install them using the 
nvidia .bin file from their website. At least Synaptic makes it easy to "pin" 
a package.

3) this X-server "update" isn't a security update anyway, there's NO 
announcement about it at all... it was just foisted on us...
