Final follow up the issue of the 686 kernel. It was not the kernel that
was causing the problem. It was interference with the modem and the
distant to the modem from the laptop. Once the modem was moved to a new
location, the 686 kernel and ipw2200 was working again. I would like to
thank everyone who provide feed back.
