No DVI possible, than video mode message during start up using analogue

The following message appears (13 secs) during Ubuntu startup, just 
before the login screen appears:

"ATTENTION cannot display this video mode, change computer display to 
1280 * 768".

(This is indeed the setting as set in @ Preferences/Screen resolution)

The Graphics card is ATI Radeon X300
The monitor is a DELL W1700 LCD TV (wide screen)

DVI D did not work (could not see the right part of the screen so was 
forced to switch to use an analogue connection)

1) preferably I like to use DVI D
2) if I have to use analogue how to get rid of the message?
