failed to initialize HAL

I just had the same problem. I did a clean install of Dapper with the
upgrades and for the first time the system had to run a disk check
(FSCK?) since it had been booted 30 times without checking. When it
booted I got the hal error.

My hal file is this:

Code:
--------------------

  # Additional options for hald

  DAEMON_OPTS=
--------------------

I'll try rebooting and seeing if it still happens. If it does, I'll try
reinstalling, then maybe renaming the file so it doesn't load at boot
and see what happens.
