Modem Logs

Having modem / connection problems.
Just recently got a brand spanking new external / serial us robotics
modem.
Hooked it up the ubuntu machine and worked like a champ...until..about 2
weeks later.
It started dropping the line as soon as I connect.
I keep the machine unplugged from both the power and the phone line when
not in use.

So question one, where are the logs located that might help me trace
this a bit further in ubuntu?

Any to I took this same modem and put it on a windows 98 box and the
modem did the same thing, only dropping a bit faster, like 1 second vs.
5 seconds.

My first idea was that the modem was bad, new or not. I has a win modem,
again brand new out of the box. I set it up on the windows box and it
drops just like the external modem.

The one kicker with this is that I have a lap top from work that is a
couple years old running windows xp with it's built in modem and it
connects just fine. I'm still suspicious of the phone like but then I
think the new modems use the newer v92 technology(not sure what the
older lap top uses.)

So I'm thinking of trying to slow down the connect. Where does one in
Ubuntu set the speed of the connection for one's modem?

Also read from one Google search that I should try should try wvdial vs.
nettools
(from this link http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=22389)

I've called the phone company and requested they check my lines too. I
live in a very rural community so phone lines are not great.

My ISP says they know of no outages during this time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
