MCP51 AC97 on-board sound worked when I installed Ubuntu, then stopped!

That wasn't it.  I used ps aux |grep various_things to check and esd
wasn't running.

I don't recall ever having problems with esd but of course YMMV.

Anyway `modprobe -v -r snd_intel8x0` followed (after a few seconds'
wait) by `modprobe -v snd_intel8x0` fixed it.
