I completely disagree. I will never install windows, just to have
a so called "reference" for the sake of a hardware vendor. And:

Well, I would ...most probably... only accept this IF I had a
hardware functionality that would not be supported and would not
work at all under Linux. 

On the other hand, in this case, I
would have bought the wrong hardware or would not have to care,
since if it does not work with Linux, their is no
difference between not working and defective. ;-)

In my opinion there is absolutely no way to let vendors drop
their responsibility, just for the reason they only claim to
support Windows. The more often we force them to realize "the
other OS", the better it is.
