Possibly. 

Also, did you disable 3rd-party repositories before you did apt-get
update && apt-get dist-upgrade? 
You might also want to try aptitude dist-upgrade instead of apt-get,
it's somewhat better at dependency resolving (Debian recommends it now
too.)

In the original post you wrote that apt-get dist-upgrade "failed while
it was running". How exactly did it fail?
