broken filesystem - give root password for maintenance

I'm having this exact same problem.
Isn't this a mjor design flaw in Ubuntu's choice to randomize/obfuscate
the root password? ext3 filesystems fsck every 30 reboots by default I
think, and if a system ever encounters an error that requires a fsck,
this most certainly isn't something that should need to be done. It
most certainly doesn't "Just Work".
I've been an advocate of this sudo habit until now - I see this as a
major problem with the whole idea.
