mysql versions

I need to install MySQL4.1 for the same reason as above (error when
attempting to connect to a newer server; different security measures?)
Do you recommend MySQL5 over 4.1? 4.1 is what the servers at my job
use, would have assumed they'd know what they were talking about :/
But in any case (if you don't bust me for using 4.1) .. After I have
installed 4.1 everything works fine apart from php5 interraction. I can
connect to newer servers from the console client, but from within php it
still gives me the authentication error, and when doing a phpinfo(), it
tells me that it's still using 4.0 (this is after a mysql/apache2
restart).
Any help on how I can update the php5-mysql version, which is 99% of
the reason why I updated? Or just tell me if 5 is better and I'll
attempt to update to that instead.
