Helping someone with an infected windows notebook this weekend.

I suggested he could try/install ubuntu since his windows need to be
wiped anyway.

After talking him through the installation procedure (skype is
marvellous for international telephone calls!) it turned out he is
using a compaq evo with w200 usb wireless card.

Found this page with valuable info how to create the drivers.
Unfortunatly he didn't have a (wired) internet connection on this
laptop , only wireless, so a chicken-egg problem arose. His wife did
have a working mac notebook with a cd burner. I setup a new hd in a
spare machine and re-created a fresh ubuntu-6.06-i386 setup. Ran your
suggestions, gathered the *.ko & firmware files to a cd iso image. Had
them download it, burn to cd and let them run the very simple install
script and they got wireless working! Since i'm pretty sure more
people have the same problem, it would be nice to offer others the same
solution. For now the iso image can be downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.het.net/ubuntu-unofficial/

Current size is 950kilobyte

Enjoy!
