i have the same layout as you (US keyboard. and type ñ all the time)
just go to System -> Keyboard and change the Compose key to something
you don't use (like the right hand side CTRL key). make that your
compose key and then you can do:
Compose N ~ to get ñ
Compose e ' to get é
etc...
