Hi I have noticed this too. I'm running an Intel Celeron Sony laptop,
made last year. Booting with the 686 kernel causes my system to take
considerable longer on moutning root filesystem. Today I booted into the
latest 386 and... well the difference is in the order of about 30
seconds.... crazy! I'm running the 386 kernel right now, doesn't seem
slower for other things either.
