I had no trouble with either link.  You might be missing some codecs.  
Run a search for "codec" in synaptic, and see if there is anything 
obviously missing for video.  You can also left click mplayer in 
synaptic, choose properties from the menu, and see the suggested files 
listed under the dependencies tab.  (It will list dependencies and any 
suggested files to load).  HTH
