I can connect to two Gentoo and one Windows box just fine. I doubt there's a
fundamental problem with Ubuntu's ssh.

Propably. But first you have to find out what it is you have to override, i.
e. find out what the problem is. Using the "-v" option with ssh might provide
some info. You can use "-v" up to three times for maximum verbosity, for
example
ssh -vvv <remote machine>
Look at
man ssh
for more info.
