To get back to the original problem, ifconfig just sets your mtu for the
current session. If you want it to stick you have to edit the
/etc/network/interfaces file. For a static connection the interfaces
manual commands works fine.

If you have a DHCP connection you need to do a handstand and a
double-backflip because mtu setting is not in the manual for a dhcp
connection.

It can be done by adding 'pre-up /etc/ifconfig $IFACE mtu 1492',
without the quotes, after the relevent iface section. I added this to
networkmanualconfiguration page of the wiki.
